In the current batshit crazy trend of AI, things are still getting warmed up.

The latest news is that Microsoft has just announced that they will be releasing a new feature called Recall. This feature will "remember" everything that you do on you Windows computer. This feature will enable your to ask Copilot what you've been upto. It will track what you do in apps, your communications in live meetings, remembers every website you've visited and a lot more.

The saving grace for now is that you need a new Copilot Plus PC, which will come with the required NPU chip. But for how long?

Now if this sounds like a bad idea, you're not alone. It sinks of privacy issues and the potential for abuse is huge.

For many reasons I personally use a Linux operating system but the simpliest one is I like to be in control of my own machine as much as I can be. This isn't to say that Linux is perfect, but it's a lot better than Windows in terms of privacy and control.

Off the back of this news are you thinking of moving to Linux? If you are here is a short list of tools that are similar to what you maybe using on Windows:

Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, Powerpoint

Chat applications

Adobe Photoshop

Microsoft Edge/Chrome

Music & Video

Gaming

Steam is available on Linux and there are plenty of games that are compatible. Using Lutris you can play games that are not available on Linux.

Development

If you are a developer that isn't beholden to Windows, then the majority of the tools you use day to day are available on Linux.

Ok that sounds great but what operating system should I use?

There are many distrubutions of Linux. But to get started I would recommend using Ubuntu or a flavour of it.
